As evidenced in this video, learning to play this song was a CHALLENGE! I'm glad I chose the guitar for this project, and plan to keep teaching myself to play. I can't imagine ever getting really good but maybe just good enough to strum along with my brother when we sing together...! I really enjoyed this project!
Here is week four of my 20% project. It doesn't look like much but took a lot of practice to get this far...
Well, I may be getting little ahead of myself this week but I found this cool lesson that I wanted to eventually advance to. D, C and G chords are all that are necessary to know in order to play a bunch of songs (easy for me to say!). Need to learn and practice a bit on my chords but look at all the songs I can put together with these three chords...it's crazy!
Really missed my brother-in-law Johnny when I sat down to practice this week...so much better having a live teacher...! But justinguitar.com is a really good alternative. I decided to concentrate on one chord this week...the A chord. I didn't have as much time to commit to practice this week but just getting at again gave me the incentive to keep practicing. So, next week I plan to commit more time to my 20 time, learn more and build up my calluses little by little... here is what I was practicing this week.
http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-112-A-chord.php Excited to report in on my first 20% session. My brother-in-law Johnny, an accomplished guitarist, gave me my first-ever guitar lesson today. He taught me three chords and helped me choose the song I'm going to learn during my 20% time. It's an old cowboy folk song called Red River Valley, written by James J. Kerrigan in 1896.
Learning to play guitar is going to be a huge challenge but I know I am going to love being able to play. I learned in my first lesson that playing the chords is difficult and will require LOTS of practice. But I'm also amazed that just by knowing a few chords you can play a song.! I need to build up some callouses on my left fingers...after just one lesson, the my fingertips feel like they have been burned just from pressing down on the strings. I'm hoping the pain doesn't last as I want to get back to it ASAP! Planning to practice my three chords and Red River Valley daily until I have it down! More next week...! I have a video to share, as soon as I can figure out how to upload it...!
I found a really cool online guitar lesson site called justinguitar.com The lessons are all free, Justin just asks for donations. !'m so excited to get started. I want to learn some chords first and this site has some great video lessons! Here is the first chord I'll learn...D!
I've chosen my 20% project! I'm going to learn how to play some chords on the guitar and maybe even a tune or two...! I plan to use technology to help me along my way...YouTube videos, instructional apps, and perhaps the help of my brother via face-time...
I will be blogging my way through this endeavor so please stay tuned. And if you have any advice or encouragement along the way I would love to hear from you! Go Hufflepuff House!! I’m excited to get started on the 20% project, where we take 20 percent of our class time to pursue a new passion. I have narrowed my choices to two – yoga or guitar. I have wanted to take a yoga class for years and just have never found the time. Two of my sisters and several friends swear by it, saying it helps with balance, strength, flexibility, and the mind. Why wouldn’t I want to improve in all of those areas?! I have also wanted to learn how to play guitar for years. One of my brothers is a musician and song writer. He gave me a really nice guitar several years ago, hoping I would learn to play so we could play together. Every time I see him he asks how it’s going with the guitar…! I know I can’t become a star during the 20% project but I could learn some basic chords, which would get me started in my journey. Below are some questions to help me decide on my project. Yoga
